Marayoor jaggery has got “Geographical Indication (GI)” tag which maps the taste to the peculiar geographical location of Marayoor, which nestles amid the forests of the Western Ghats. This geographical identity gives the sugar cane a distinct taste and flavour.
‘Marayoor Unda Sharkarai’, the traditional and handmade product from Marayoor, Idukki district of Kerala, is one of the sweetest jaggeries produced in Idukki. The age-old specialized skill of the local people in making the jaggery in the farm itself, makes it a unique product.
It has no chemicals added during the manufacturing process. Also, it is not manufactured in modern factories or using modern equipment. It is prepared in sheds located on the sugarcane farm itself.
Marayoor jaggery it is dark brown in colour, high in sweetness and iron, with less sodium content and insoluble impurities
